HRM the Journal

Ever wondered whether 'wikinomics' would impact the business of academia? I am collaborating with 400+ of our colleagues around the world in a project started by Charles Wankel. The project is a new management text which will be written in collaboration using a wiki type interface (although published in paper as well as digital formats).

The project includes a chapter on HRM and I am the editor - I want to invite anyone interested to join us in this venture (in HR or other areas. You first step would be to join our group (MTC - listed on the right hand side of the page).

The project website is here: http://globally-collaborating.com/

and the wiki pages are located here: http://humanresource.pubproject.wikispaces.net/

You need to register for the latter.

The book will be revolutionary in a number of ways, not limited to the fact that it will be the product of hundreds of collaborators from dozens of countries. Also, we will be developing some multimedia support in the way of interviews, cases and other teaching supports.

Publisher is Routledge. As Charles is the 'capo di tutti capi' for the project I hope that he may chime in on this discussion.

Come join in the fun!
best
James

Let me reiterate that YOU are welcome to join the fray and the fun and the adventure of being in a global collaboration with colleagues from 90 nations. We are creating a book with many 21st century aspects and hope as the book proceeds over time to push our publisher Routledge into letting us be more wildly creative in that. With hundreds of us, the workload can be very manageable, like contributing a case study or video interview in a language of the place where you are located. One of our sites is: http://globally-collaborating.com. That should give another overview of it. To join the fray contact our project coordinator Jurate Stanaityte jurate.stanaityte@sh.se to send our project placement survey of your interests. (Then you are sent an invitation to the appropriate space on our wiki). Join!
Globally collaborating,
Charles

This is really interesting. It may be useful to say more about how the project is going - the pros and cons to date. It sounds like all could learn a lot about the experience itself.

Early days yet. Much of the work right now is on building the group and organizing, or rather nurturing the self-organizing of the work. Each chapter is working independently under a common framework. However, pretty much across the board the start-up work involved brainstorming and benchmarking. This is the phase that my chapter is currently in.

I think we will have more to report in the next few months as the writing and collaborative-editing of work begins.

We will have a workshop at AOM that Charlie has organized to discuss and review our learnings on this project.

I will be providing updates within the MTC group. I also want to reiterate that we are open to new members/coauthors in the HR chapter, if anyone in here would like to chip-in...

More soon!
cheers from the Farm...

Hi James
Can I also join you as a co-author of your Chapter on HRM in the MTC book?I would like to write a paper on HRM aspects in the Indian IT industry.(This wil be in addition to what I am working on in Chapter 22 of the book).

Nilay

Hi Nilay, thank you for your interest in the HR chapter. Please go ahead and sign up for the chapter on the wiki page (details are in the MTC group page on this site). We are currently still in benchmarking mode. Once we have identified all of the essential and desired topics for the chapter, we can share them out amongst the authors. I think that some work on the unique country challenges particular to HRM would be essential reading.
cheers

Extended consideration of Indian HRM might also be something for the additional digital material on the book's students' resources site. In future editions we might have a hyperlinked digital edition to better leverage such resources, too.

One of the things I would really like in this extended content is to have consideration of labor law from as many countries as possible. So if group members from each country want to contribute to this, please give me a shout!

Hi Guys,

just wanted to let you know, we all had a great meeting at AOM two weeks ago. The chapter is making some progress. At this point, you should have already seen the ToC over at the wikipage. If you have not yet signed up to write a section, it's not too late.

The deadline for contributions is 1st October, so a little over a month away. This is not so bad when you consider that each of us is only writing a small part of the entire chapter.

I was also inspired to blog a little about this experience here...

If anyone has any questions, or comments, let me know
cheers!

Hi James
I don't know if you saw this message of mine which I sent while the AOM was on.Well here it is again:

Dear James
Have a nice time in Disneyland!! Do let us know after you are back from Anaheim about how the AOM went.By the way who is the Distinguished Executive Speaker this time?Last year in Philadelphia it was Alan Lafely of P&G.I couldn't find anything on the site about such a speech this year. Also last year in Philly there was a very nice panel discussion on the relevance and future of management education and the panelists included Henry Mintzberg , Clayton Christensen , Mike Tushman , Mike Bawdy - and this was webcast live around the world.Isn't there anything like that this time?

Nilay"

Thanks and Regards

Hi Nilay,
well this is a little embarrassing. My time at AOM was spent almost entirely at meetings. I attended two paper sessions, both of which where I was presenting, and one PDW, which was the one for the MTC project (see my blog for more on this).

For the HR division events, I managed to make it to the Ice Cream social and the evening social. For the parties (I normally try to get to as many of these as possible!), I only made it to our own event (Bocconi).

In between was literally a whirlwind of one-on-ones with coauthors, colleagues and new contacts. So to answer your question, I really don't know. But you could probably find it out over at either http://hrdiv.org or http://aom.org where the program is stored.
cheers!
James
