Hello Angel, maybe you could try SHRM website (http://www.shrm.org/Pages/default.aspx) and OB teaching website (http://www.obts.org/)? Both websites provide good resources for teaching HR/OB.

Colleagues:

I have been using the HRCP preparation manual and Pfeffer's The Human Equation to teach an MBA level Human Resources class. The students are also preparing to take the PHR exam in December.

I am Lulwa AlMutlaq, Bahraini HR Senior Professional and Consultant. I have been teaching HRM to professionals and those who are just join HR and would like to learn more about it. In my opinion, HRM is a highly interesting area for developing people and organizations and the best way for teaching HR is to link it to the practice, Why we are doing things the way we are doing it? A lot of HR policies and procedures are done because the top managment want it that way so let us follow the rules. Organizational leaders' perspective and views of HR has a lot to do on the HRM applications. So to make it interesting and value added to our learners, I always relate the concept to workplace and give them examples, stories, incidents, and "what if" scenario and let them reflect on this and identified the pros and cons. I always tell my learners that collectively, you have a lot of experience and the course objective is to bring all these experiences together and let you think "Aha, Now I understand why things happen this way". Teaching should be a forum for discussing and elaborating reasons behind people issues and practice. Therefore, the most influential and value added approach is the one based on collaborative based learning and exploration of workplace issues which are at the heart of HRM. Hope to hear more comments on this issue to help us improve our practice further.

Thank you James and Keith for your comments. I always feel that teaching HRM is not such an interesting task - students felt boring about the materials that they somehow know a little bit and quite dry; I felt that there is no stimulating or exciting materials that will motivate me or my students - teaching became a boring task. I hope this forum could help those of us out of this pitfall, and provide a spot for the successful practices in conducting HRM teaching.

Hello there!

Echoing James' opening comments, I too think this is an excellent idea for a group. Many thanks. Bing.

My name is Keith Jackson, based in London & in Switzerland. For several years I've enjoyed visiting professor appointments teaching HRM in Japan, China (incl. Hong Kong), Turkey, UK, Germany and now Switzerland. I mainly work on EMBA programmes.

One of the thrilling pathways I find into designing & delivering HRM courses is that we are all (students & tutors, everyone) 'consumers' of HRM: we are all 'experts' in as much as we have experiences and perceptions that repeatedly and legitimately challenge the findings and processes of HRM research ethics.

I'd be interested to hear other colleagues' views on this.

Hi Folks, what a good idea for a group. I am not sure if you heard, but we recently ran the 5th edition of the Innovative Teaching in HR/IR conference. We had a lot of neat presentations and ideas at the conference, which was hosted by U. Minnesota Carlson School this year.

I hope we will get some more of the participants involved here, and perhaps we can generate some knowledge sharing/ideas in here. Thanks to Bing Ran for starting this one! best, James
