HRM the Journal

I have just assumed responsibilty for an undergraduate class called Employment Law. While the name of the class cannot change, I intend to reorient the approach to be more like Employment or HR Policy--touching on the regulatory, policy, and institutional environment within which managers make HR-related decisions.

I am looking to brainstorm a bit on some of the phenomena that you think undergraduates might find interesting and relevent as well as the reading assignments that might support these topics.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I have always found that HRM students want to talk about the laws and the regulations but in the context of how to comply. There always seems to be the same questions asked about FMLA, ADA, FMLA, etc, no matter how many times we talk about it. With that in mind, I do think that an environmental scan is interesting, especially to undergraduates who get their news from Jon Stewart. A review of what societal things are going on, the political environment in an election year, the probablity of a Democratic president and congress, the economy; all things that affect the decisions and plans we make.
I also think that getting them to read something other than their textbooks is helpful. They would not normally read Tom Friedman or John Kotter but they are helpful in, again, giving them context.

That's really useful, Greg. I like the idea of using Friedman--someone they may already know of or at least recognize--to highlight the ways globalization challenges institutions whose jurisdiction ceases at national borders.
