About Me:
My research examines the strategic or advantage-seeking behaviour of individuals in employment, and identifies implications for the individuals themselves, their employers or policy more generally. From my PhD (in Occupational Psychology) onwards, the world-view underpinning my research is that individuals are rational and self-optimising. Early projects focused on graduates’ career-related attitudes and behaviour, drawing out the implications for career management in organisations. A subsequent project, also on careers, examined how job candidates’ relationships with intermediaries affected their employment outcomes. More recently I have focused on individuals working in innovation (such as academics and corporate scientists), investigating the strategic choice of research collaborators and positioning in social networks, and identifying implications for policy intended to promote university-business collaboration. A second current research stream examines employment advantages conferred by the acquisition of human capital by undergraduates.
